2019 Pennsylvania Wilds Rally
July 14-July 20, 2019
(reservation due by May 1, 2019)
Clinton County Fairgrounds
Lock Haven, PA
Monday- Piper Aviation Museum- The Company was well known for its "Cub" aircraft, and a series bearing Indian names such as Aztec, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Comanche, Navajo, and Pawnee. The factory was closed in 1984. Piper Aircraft Corporation grew to become the world’s leading producer of general aviation aircraft. Lunch will be at the Restless Oaks Restaurant, and then we’ll be taking a ride up through the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon for some afternoon sightseeing and ice cream. Dinner will be at Henry’s BBQ on our way back to the Fairgrounds.
Tuesday- Victorian Bellefonte & PSU Campus tour- Breakfast at the Waffle Shop, walking tour of Victorian Bellefonte in the morning. Later in the day, we’ll be visiting the main campus of Penn State, Beaver Stadium and, of course, the PSU Berkey Creamery for some of the best ice cream in the universe! Later in the day, we’ll be heading back towards Lock Haven for a meal at the fairgrounds featuring smoked Pork Loin, BBQ Baked Beans, Slaw and Potato Salad. Guests are asked to bring a desert to share.
Wednesday- Elk Country… A BIG DAY!! (Without ice cream) We’ll head up to Hyner Run State Park and take in the view from the overlook. Then, we’ll be continuing our journey along the Bucktail Scenic Highway into the heart of the Pennsylvania Elk Country. This is a place that lives up to its name. Home to the largest free-roaming elk herd in the northeastern United States, Elk Country features two large visitor centers and some beautiful terrain. For those who are a little “worn out” by the mid afternoon, you can head back to the fairgrounds (about an hour’s drive). But for the more adventurous, we’ll be continuing our journey up to St Marys- home of the Straub Brewery- one of the oldest and most historic breweries in the United States. It is still owned and operated by its founding family, now into its sixth and seventh generations. Fodor’s Travel named Straub Brewery one of the “5 Best Places in America to Drink American Beer.” Dinner is “on your own” at one of the many restaurants in Lock Haven or along the way from St Marys.
Thursday- Penns Cave & Millheim- Breakfast provided at the Fairgrounds and then we leave for a tour of Penns Cave- America’s only All-Water cavern tour. It will be a nice and cool place to get away from the heat of the day. After the tour, we will journey to Millheim, PA and have late lunch at the Elk Creek Café & Microwbrewery, followed by some local shopping and then a return to Lock Haven for a nap. Dinner is “on your own” or some of us will be grilling hamburgers at the fairgrounds. The evening will feature entertainment at the Car Auction.
Friday and Saturday- 18th Annual Antique and Classic Car Auction- July 18th, 19th & 20th- Beginning Thursday night, we are going to enjoy the festivities at the Annual Car Auction held across the street from the Fairgrounds. This will include music, good times and free food! For those of you interested in some really cool old cars (and who might even want to take one home), bring a car dolly and we’ll help you spend YOUR money! For the “ladies” and those not interested in the cars, Kelly will be leading a shopping excursion to downtown State College, TJ Maxx, Homegoods, Trader Joes and lunch will be at the Wegman’s Café on Friday. Dinner is on your own.
Sunday- Departure and travel to points north, including the Finger Lakes, Vermont and New Hampshire. Many of us will be meandering from place to place on our way to the rally in Boothbay Harbor, ME. The week is open for any and all destinations “inbetween” the two rallies.
Although this is a Vintage Birds Rally, non-members can attend as chapter guests. The $50 Rally Fee includes pavilion rental, daily coffee and morning snacks along with a Smoked BBQ dinner on Tuesday night for up to two people. Camping is $25 per night. The fairgrounds sites include water and electric. There is a dump station on the premises. Payment (via check to “Clinton County Fair”) for campsite is due upon arrival.
